SAIL 2025 is set to be an extraordinary event, marking its 10th edition with unparalleled
grandeur. From August 20th to August 24th, 2025, the waters of Amsterdam’s IJ harbor will
come alive with over 800 majestic ships from around the world. As Europe’s largest nautical
celebration, SAIL has captivated visitors since its inception!
Sail 1975
The first edition of SAIL took place from August 15th to August 18th 1975, marking a
monumental celebration of Amsterdam’s 700th anniversary. This milestone event,
supported by the Port of Amsterdam, saw the birth of SAIL, where over 500 ships and a vast
fleet of traditional Dutch round and flat-bottomed vessels gathered on the IJ.

Since its remarkable debut, SAIL has fascinated both sailers and maritime enthusiasts worldwide. Its
resounding success inspired the decision to host the event every five years. Although the
2020 edition was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this only heightened the
anticipation for SAIL 2025—the event’s 10th edition. This year promises a triple celebration,
combining SAIL’s 50th anniversary with Amsterdam’s 750th year, making it an unmissable occasion.
